How Ashtakoot matching works

Ashtakoot, the eight-fold match, compares the two Moons: their signs (rashi) and their nakshatras. Each of the eight kutas (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi) carries a fixed number of points, from 1 for Varna to 8 for Nadi, adding up to 36.

Tradition treats 18 points as the usual minimum. Because the method looks only at the Moon, astrologers read it alongside the full charts: the 7th house and its lord, Venus, the Navamsa (D9) and the periods each person is running.
